10 families participated in a pilot project sponsored by United Way and administered by HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters).
The purpose of the program was to help get children aged 3-4 ready to learn in school.  Through an anonymous donor, 10 Nook Color ereaders were purchased to use innovative technology to help children learn to appreciate ebooks at an early age.  After 8 months of weekly instruction, each family that qualified (through regular attendance) could keep the Nook Color!  Weekly dinners were provided as incentives for attendance.  The one Wednesday out of the month that the program was held at Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch, The Spiritist Society of North Beach provided a greatly appreciated take-home dinner for four.
